I review new bands or CDs often based on what I've heard on internet. Sometimes that's a whole album, but iften I've just heard one or a few songs from the record. Of course it's hard to write anything substantial after hearing just one song. But teh first impression is very important to me. I often decide if I like a band after just a few bars of music. If I like something, I want to share this with others and that's what I try to do with this indieblog. I only needed one song of Bon Iver to make my mind up, but I was also very glad that I found some other songs later.Bon Iver (a deliberately misspelled French ‘bon hiver’ or ‘good winter’) is in fact Justin Vernon. After his band DeYarmond Edison was disbanded in 2005, he left to his father's cabin in the remote mountain area of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He stayed here all alone during three winter months. In those months he wrote the songs for his solo debut “For Emma, Forever Ago” and he aslo recorded the main part of the album in that cabin. Bon Iver first released this album by himself in 2007.
If you google the name Bon Iver, you'll find a lot of weblogs (e.g. Brooklyn Vegan) on which is written about this album in a lot of praising words. I can only agree with those bloggers because the songs I've heard have surprised me very much. Mainly just guitar and a falsetto voice, very sensitive and beautiful. This will probably the reason why the album will be re-released on Jagjaguwar next month. Justin performed on the radioshow The Current from MPR a few days ago and the interesting interview and the three songs he played can be heard on the website.
