Times New Viking

TNVIf you hear a lot of unknown music, like I do, you'll experience that it could become one large sound mess. There aren't that many bands who stand out because they are very, very good or completely different. I think that there's maybe one band every month which I will jot down on a special list. This is the list I'll use in about eleven months to make myself a resumé of the year. But maybe I hear about two hundred new bands each month and these bands may be nice, but probably not more than nice. I haven't decided for myself in which category Times New Viking belongs.

The trio Times New Viking consists of drummer Adam Elliot, keyboardist Beth Murphy and guitarist Jared Phillips from Columbus, Ohio.  Adam and Beth also share the vocal duties. At the end of 2005 they debuted with the album "Dig Yourself" and in April last year they released "Present the Paisely Reich", also with the small label Siltbreeze Records. Now Times New Viking have made the move to the 'big' Matador Records and they released the third album "Rip It Off" last week. The songs on this album are still as short and basic as for instance "Teenage Lust" from the second CD. You can hear this song on MySpace.

I'm always curious how such a rough punk music would sound if it was polished, but I'm sure that it would take the heart out of the music.
