Tomorrow I'll go to a concert of Neil Young in Amsterdam and this is an old dream being realized. I've always thought that Neil Young is a world famous star, but when I mentioned this concert to some of my young colleagues, I saw big question marks on their faces. They had never heard of him and that did hurt my feelings. This was obviously a mistake in their upbringing. You can't know every singer or musician, but I thought that there was a certain group of musiscians everybody knew. Well, not! But I also have to admit that I'd never heard of the singer Zooey Deschanel, although this is a lot less strange.
Zooey is mostly known as an actress and when I started looking further, I discovered that she'd played the sister of William, the leading person of the nostalgic music film "Almost Famous" from Cameron Crowe. But Zooey is also a singer and together with M. Ward she forms the new and unexpected duo She & Him.
Till now Zooey activities with music had been a bit on the quiet, but in the mean time she'd written dozens of songs and some of them have now been recorded with Mat Ward as guitarist, arranger and producer. The album "Volume One" by She & Him shall be released on Merge Records in a month. The atmosphere of the songs reminds me of Dusty Springfield and Linda Ronstadt and this is one of the best complements you can get as a singer.>mp3: Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?
